Hindu Education for Children and Adults

THE NEED FOR SUCH A PROGRAM

Hindus have many scriptures and religious writings. But there is one scripture, "The Bhagavad-Gita" (The Sacred Song), spoken by Lord Krishna, the God incarnate, and written about 5,000 years ago, that gives the essence of Hindu Religion. The Gita is like a Hindu Bible. Using the Gita as the main source book, the International Gita Society was founded in 1988 with the sole aim of promoting basic knowledge and understanding of Hinduism, free from any particular sectarian slant, using the Gita as the main source book.

For children:

The Gita has been translated into many world languages, but a translation suitable for beginners and children is not available.  Thus, education of Hindu children is lacking. This lack adversely affects the value system as our children grow up.  We hope to correct the situation by publishing the basic tenets of Hinduism in both print media and audiovisual multi-media.

(A)  Audio-visual approach: Develop a multi-media project, including an exciting interactive website for children that incorporates the basic tenets of Hinduism from Vedas, Puranas, Gita, Ramayana, and other Hindu scriptures.  We propose to make this available free on the internet.  CDs will be available for S&H cost only.

 (B)  The Bhagavad-Gita for the Children:  A book giving the basic teachings of the Gita with illustrations. We propose to make this available free on the internet.

(C)  Develop a beginner-level book on Hinduism for children that covers, but may not be limited to, the following topics:

  1. Basic principles of Hinduism

   (a) The Ten Commandments of Hinduism
   (b) There is only one omnipotent God
   (c) Why Hindus worship deities

   (e) Why people do wrong things
   (f) What to do if the worst is happening
   (g) Tradition and modernity
   (h) Secrets of a happy family life

   3.  Theory of Karma and righteous action

    (a) The soul is eternal
    (b) Selfish desires degrade you
    (c) What is death?
    (d) Reincarnation
    (e) Different types of Yogas and Nirvana

     (c) How you can get what you want
     (d) Your parents are your best friends

For adults:

(1)  Free Gita distribution program. We provide free Gita to Hindu temples, organizations, and individuals in USA.  We also provide free Gita to schools, public and prison libraries.  Currently, we are distributing 30,000 pocket size Gitas per year. If more funds are made available we would expand our existing Gita publication and distribution program.

 (2) Free Correspondence Course.  International Gita Society has been actively promoting the basic teachings and principles of Hinduism ever since its inception in 1988.  We started with a free Gita correspondence course for adults in 1990 just after our first edition of the Bhagavad-Gita was published. This course continues to serve the Hindu community, both adults and young adults through the internet.  At present, we reach 1,500 correspondents per year.
